Roland D. Dowdy, III (Dusty), saxophone
This season marks Roland D. Dowdy, III (Dusty)’s second appearance with Wintergreen Music. In his career, he has championed the saxophone in the classical medium, commissioning and premiering numerous works by composers such as Augusta Read Thomas, John Harbison, Allan Blank and Karel Husa. Dr. Dowdy serves as the principal saxophonist of the Richmond Symphony and the Williamsburg Symphony, and has performed in this capacity with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Peninsula Music Festival, and the Odessa Philharmonic of the Ukraine. Dr. Dowdy received degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University and Northwestern University, as a student of Edward Fraedrich and Dr. Frederick L. Hemke. He was a prizewinner in the North American Saxophone Alliance Young Artist’s Competition, the Alexandra Symphony Concerto Competition, the VCU Concerto Competition, and the Northwestern University Chamber Music Competition. Dr. Dowdy has served on the faculties of the College of William and Mary, the Collegiate School, Virginia Commonwealth University, Northwestern University and Trinity International University. He currently serves as Worship Leader of Redeeming Grace Baptist Church, and lives in Mathews, Virginia with his wife Dawn and their children Davis, Dillon, Daphne and Dawson.
