Morning Seminar: Japanese Folk Textiles: The Spirit of the Mottainai Philosophy with Sayaka Suzuki of the VMFA

  • The Lookout Grassy Ridge Roseland, VA, 22967 United States (map)

"Japanese Folk Textiles: The Spirit of the Mottainai Philosophy"

Unlike the colorful, silky and floral kimonos, sashiko and boro were worn by the rural poor thus never gained much attention or became fashionable.

Yet embedded in their creation is the purest form of Japanese aesthetics; humble and unapologetic filled with stories and hope.

The lecture will begin with brief history of Japan and different types of kimonos worn during each period.

On the topic of Sashiko and Boro, various textile techniques and processes will be covered and audiences will have the opportunity to handle samples of sashiko, sakiori, indigo dyed fabrics and various types of kimono and obi.

Amanda Dalla Adams' lecture has been replaced with "Japanese Folk Textiles".
