John Preston Smith, IV enjoys a wonderfully diverse career at the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. John has been associated with the orchestra since 1987 as a bass player. In 2000 he was appointed to Assistant Bass and three years later to Associate where he maintains that post today. In 2007 he joined the full time administrative staff as the orchestra's librarian. John is one of the founding musicians of RSO's newly developed Wellness Arts program serving many of the valley's Memory Care units with a weekly musical program that provides enjoyment to the residents. John has also been a bassist with Wintergreen Music since 2000 and librarian since 2014. John's son, John, V will be returning to Wintergreen this summer as Assistant Librarian. John V graduated from Patrick Henry High School and also received his Associates degree from Virginia Western Community College this year. He will continue his education in engineering and music in Nashville at Vanderbilt University this Fall. John's wife Pati is on the Interventional Medicine team at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mr. Smith's education includes: Artist Diploma studies at The Boston Conservatory of Music 1980 and a B.M. from George Mason University in 1984.
