Custom Colonial History of Nelson County Tour from The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen on Wednesday, September 18
$75 per person (plus lunch); 14 spaces available
Join biologist and amateur historian Doug Coleman for a one-day (9:00 am-4:00 pm) tour of Nelson County’s Colonial History. After pick up (from the Mountain and in the Valley), start in Scottsville (Nelson County’s original county seat in 1744) then travel “up country” following the James River by its’ colonial name of “The Fluvanna”. Stop for a view of the original Scottsville courthouse site when Nelson was part of Big Albemarle County. Following site visits and stops will include Howardsville, named for early settler, Allen Howard, and the Dr. William Cabell site at Warminster, which was perhaps Nelson’s earliest European settlement. Continuing up river, pass by the site of one of the five Monacan Indian towns in Virginia at Wingina and Soldier’s Joy, the extant home of colonial congressman, Sam Cabell. Cabell reportedly slept on the House floor in the Election of 1800 so he could vote for Jefferson’s presidency in the runoff election with Aaron Burr. Next, stop for lunch (available for purchase) in Lovingston, then tour historic Oak Ridge Estate to learn about the Cabell family legacy and the remarkable success story of Thomas Fortune Ryan, a native Nelson County child who became a highly successful businessman and contemporary of JP Morgan.
