Open to graduate, undergraduate, and advanced high school string players. Both individuals and pre-formed ensembles are invited to apply.

Students develop musical and instrumental skills, hone their chamber music and interpersonal negotiating abilities, and evolve into strong, independent artists – all while observing their teachers and mentors perform at the Wintergreen Music Festival.
The outstanding string faculty and coaches are members of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra and special guest artists. These instructors play in orchestras and ensembles across the country and internationally and are university teachers or experienced pedagogues.
String Academy ensembles also have the option to work closely with Composition Academy students and instructors to explore, perform, and record new works.

What to expect
One private lesson per week with our top-notch faculty
Twice-weekly masterclasses and weekly instrument-specific technique classes
Study and performance of up to three major chamber music works
Multiple opportunities to work with and observe the professional musicians of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra, comprised of musicians from top orchestras and chamber music societies around the country
Large ensemble readings with our esteemed guest Conductors
At least one public performance per week in formal and informal settings, building confidence and experience in concert presentation
Guidance in public speaking and community engagement
Free access to nearly all Wintergreen Music Festival performances (a $525 minimum value)
Beautiful hiking trails, breathtaking overlooks, and free access to the Wintergreen Resort Fitness and Aquatics Center
Electives such as: recording technology, conducting, working with composers, music business, body mechanics
A typical week includes:
Time for Individual practice
Twelve hours of ensemble rehearsal
Three hours of ensemble coaching
Two masterclasses with faculty and/or guest artists
A private lesson
One or two elective classes
Rare opportunities to observe faculty chamber music rehearsals
Attendance at Wintergreen Music Festival orchestral and chamber music performances
Recreation and time to relax with friends and colleagues
APPLICATION DEADLINES & INFORMATION
Early Bird Deadline; Fee only $45
Beginning February 2, Fee increases to $65
All decisions regarding admission, merit scholarship, and financial aid will be published by March 15 via email from the Accept’d application portal.
Video (preferred) or audio recordings of at least two contrasting works demonstrating technical and musical ability.
The combined length of the recordings should be at least 15 minutes total in duration. Applicants may upload file or provide a link during the application process.
Current resume of training and experience.
List of chamber music works studied and/or performed. Chamber music experience is not a requirement. This list helps us create chamber groups of matching experience.

Those wishing to apply for need-based financial aid will need to submit a Statement of Need and an electronic copy or their parents' 2018 or 2019 Federal Tax Return (or country-specific equivalent) with sensitive information removed.
Those wishing to apply for work-study financial aid will need to briefly outline any relevant experience.
We encourage all applicants to apply for financial aid in addition to merit scholarship. Each is considered separately by different committees, and each committee can only evaluate the information provided by each applicant.

Room and Board:
Full session: $1,920
Half sessions: $960
What fees cover: Tuition and Room & Board includes all program costs, food and lodging, free admission to the aquatics center, a Festival t-shirt, admission to all Festival concerts, and transportation from and to the Charlottesville airport, train station, or bus terminal.
