Q. Where is the Festival held?

A. The Wintergreen Music Festival is based at Wintergreen Resort in Nellysford, Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Most concerts are held in the open-air Dunlop Pavilion at the Resort (located behind the Mountain Inn on the ski slopes), complete with cool breezes and mountain views! Some chamber music performances are also presented in the Valley and at our wonderful neighboring wineries, cideries, and breweries. We are so appreciative of our partnership with Wintergreen Resort, who helps us with housing, rehearsal spaces, and other important Festival logistics, all while working on their own projects that help make Wintergreen the beautiful and captivating Destination that our concertgoers love so much.

Q. What kind of music will I hear?

A. Artistic Director Erin Freeman has a masterful way of creating concerts that have something for everyone. We focus on classical music (nothing pairs better with the scenery) in small ensembles and in four weekends of powerful and impressive full symphony orchestra. This year, the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra returns led by guest conductors Rei Hotoda, Louis Lohraseb, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, and our own Erin Freeman. Musicians travel from the top orchestras, chamber ensembles, and conservatories to perform for you atop Wintergreen mountain. They truly thrive in this unique environment where they have the opportunity to perform for you up close (chamber music) and through the ultimate musical medium — the symphony orchestra! We love to make classical music as accessible and immersive as possible. So throughout the Festival, you might hear a brass quintet at Three Notch’d Brewing, sample a performance with your tasting at Veritas Vineyards & Winery or Valley Road Vineyards, or even feel like you’re listening to a movie score while watching the gorgeous mountain views.

On Festive Fridays this year, you can enjoy Bluegrass, Big Band Jazz, American Folk, and Jazz Cabaret. Experience surprising and “meaty” chamber music on our weeknight concert series, Fresh Perspectives. Mix, Mingle & Music concerts return this season where you can start by sipping a partner pour before enjoying one hour of music with plenty of time to dine après-concert. We highly recommend you try one In-Home Concert Special (before they sell out!) where you’ll enter a gorgeous private residence to hear musicians perform some of their favorite selections before mingling with musicians and patrons during an elevated cocktail hour with heavy hors d'oeuvres. Explore the beauty Blue Ridge in special collaborations with The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen for Music & Nature events. Finally, our MountainTop Masterworks concerts on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons will surely impress you, your friends, and inspire you with the power and finesse of a full symphony orchestra in flight. If you attend just one concert this summer, make sure you sample a MountainTop Masterworks and bring a friend!

Please note that for the free Special Event: An American Salute with Orchestra on Saturday, July 6 at 7:00 pm, advanced seating may be reserved for Festival Season Passholders only.

Q. Are performances held outdoors or indoors?

A. Our main performance tent, the Dunlop Pavilion, offers the best of both worlds. While providing excellent protection from the elements to attendees, musicians, and instruments, the side panels remain open during good weather allowing us to take advantage of the stunning mountaintop views and cool breezes.

Q. Are the performance venues handicapped accessible?

A. Yes. All of the Wintergreen Music Festival performance venues are fully accessible. The Dunlop Pavilion is situated on a level pad and there are no stairs. Persons who need the accessibility option can be dropped off near the venue by accessing the slopes through Lot 2. Parking spaces for those needing accessibility accommodations will also be available in clearly marked spaces near the Dunlop Pavilion. Accessible restrooms are located nearby the performance venue.

Q. Where do I park?

A. As you approach Wintergreen Resort's Mountain Inn (approximately 3 miles from the gate house at the bottom of the mountain), there will be Festival Parking signs to the “Dunlop Pavilion.” You may park in front of the Mountain Inn (lots A-D) and walk down the slopes or you may park in Lot 1 or 2, as available, and walk back to the slopes to the Dunlop Pavilion. Please look for ample signage to direct you!

Q. Are performances held during inclement weather?

A. The show will go on, rain or shine. We will update our website and Facebook page with any communication related to any changes. Wintergreen Music will make every effort to allow for maximum air flow and ventilation throughout the Dunlop Pavilion. If the tent needs to be closed due to weather conditions, patrons, staff, and musicians may choose to wear masks. Thank you for your cooperation in being a courteous and respectful patron!

Q. Are food and beverages available onsite?

A. Wine, beer, cider, soft drinks, and bottled water sales will available for purchase onsite in advance of Dunlop Pavilion concerts and during scheduled intermissions. Profits from your concession purchases directly benefit Wintergreen Music. We proudly pour wine curated by neighboring establishment, Basic Necessities, local cider, and beer and non-alcoholic seltzers from our newest neighbor, Three Notch’d Brewery.

Wintergreen Resort offers a variety of options for dining and meals before or after an event, and The Market at Wintergreen has a great selection of gourmet deli sandwiches and salads, fresh baked goods and pizza. Please note Wintergreen Resort’s updates and hours.

Q. Where should I stay during the Wintergreen Music Festival?

A. We highly encourage Festival attendees to stay at Wintergreen Resort using a unique toll free number: 855-491-1486. Our main partner knows the best tips and tricks to enjoy the area and they offer Festival patrons 20% off lodging! New this year, you can also take advantage of discounted Festival tickets, spa treatments, or bed & breakfast offerings through Resort lodging packages — the easiest way to enjoy an immersive retreat experience. But hurry! Many people are planning their summer retreats now and rentals are filling up fast!

Q. What other recreational activities are available in the area?

A. Many performances are held at Wintergreen Resort where patrons can also take advantage of the many activities offered by Wintergreen Resort, which include hiking, tennis, swimming, golf and spa services. The surrounding areas of the Rockfish Valley and Route 151 in Nelson County is home to many of the area's best breweries, vineyards, cideries, distilleries, and restaurants. In between concerts, take a leisurely scenic drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway and/or Skyline Drive, accessible just minutes from Wintergreen. Visit Nelson County Tourism to see everything "the sunrise side of the Blue Ridge" has to offer and find out why our Community is truly a Destination to remember.

Q. Is the Wintergreen Music Festival appropriate for children?

A. Kids are always welcome to attend performances! Contact us for recommendations on concerts we think they will especially enjoy (ahem, July Fourth Festivities) — there are countless concerts perfect for kids, grandkids, and the entire family! All children’s tickets are $6 (ages 3-11), learn more here.

Q. Is Wintergreen Music part of Wintergreen Resort?

A. Wintergreen Music is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization separate from Wintergreen Resort. The Resort is a major sponsor of Wintergreen Music and while we would not be successful without their partnership, we are managed and operated separately by dedicated year-round and seasonal team members. We are very grateful for the support of Wintergreen Resort, of the Wintergreen Property Owners Association, and many other sponsors, partners, and community organizations.

Q. what happened to wintergreen performing arts?

A. Wintergreen Performing Arts changed its name to Wintergreen Music in 2019. Following a strategic planning process, rebranding was introduced to consolidate the many previous names of the organization (i.e. Wintergreen Performing Arts, WPA; Wintergreen Summer Music Festival, WSMF; Wintergreen Summer Music Academy, WSMA; Wintergreen Summer Music Festival & Academy, WSMF/A) into a name and branding that better reflects the unique experience of the Festival. Read more about the new look and the method behind it here.

Q. WHAT ARE THE WINTERGREEN MUSIC TICKETING POLICIES & EXPECTATIONS?

A. It is our desire to create a welcoming, compassionate environment, understanding that much change has happened over the past few years. We ask that you please join us in being courteous and respectful of others.

We do our very best to communicate the environment of each concert setup, so you have full information on how best to participate as an individual. Thank you for your understanding.

All tickets are non-refundable if live performances take place (all repertoire, artists & venues subject to change). In the event of live event cancellation, tickets are refundable. Ticket purchasers agree to comply and abide by safety guidelines established by Wintergreen Music. Wintergreen Music will make every effort to clearly communicate changes and provide updates, especially closer to performance dates.
