T. Alan Stewart is a freelance musician in the Baltimore-Washington, DC area. He has served as principal bassist of the Williamsburg Symphony, Roanoke Symphony, and the Washington Concert Opera, and has performed with the Washington National Opera, the New Mexico Symphony, the Virginia Symphony and numerous music groups in the DMV area. Alan attended the North Carolina School of the Arts in the high-school division and continued in the college program where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance having studied with Lynn Peters. He attended graduate school at Arizona State University where he studied with Dr. S. Daniel “Doc” Swaim and, as recipient of the New York Philharmonic Music Assistance Fund Fellowship, Harold Robinson, who was principal bass of the National Symphony Orchestra at the time. He attributes his experiences with the NSO in making him the musician he is today.

Alan has toured extensively with the NSO under Mstislav Rostropovich, the Baltimore Symphony under Yuri Temirkanov, and the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson-Thomas.  He has played in countries and capital cities across the world: Rome, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Assisi, Sienna, Florence, Spoleto, the Baltic Republics, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mexico, Canada, and Bermuda.

Alan performs on two instruments. His orchestra bass is a 1985-Horst Grünert, Vincenzo Panormo copy.  He also plays on a bass built by Richmond Symphony bassist and luthier, Romano Solano.

Alan and his spouse, Andrew, live in Baltimore with their two cats, Miss Ruby and Dottie. During the pandemic, they welcomed a very energetic puppy to the family and named her Lily-Rae. She is a Black Mouth Cur, which is a breed from the American south and, interestingly, is the breed of the dog from the book Old Yeller. Alan and Andrew love cooking and entertaining, hiking, tubing, biking, and spending time with family in Charlevoix, Michigan and Truro, Massachusetts. Alan speaks fluent Italian and functional Spanish, but his life-long plan is to become fluent in Spanish, French, and German and functional in Portuguese.
