Enjoy a calm Wintergreen morning with Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass, set to the gorgeous views of green mountain grass and silvery blue skies. Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo’s compositional style surprises, as he infuses sacred elements and cinematic motion pictures with the classical styles of Brahms, Britten, and Bach. Join the Wintergreen Music Festival Orchestra and singers from across the country under the direction of Artistic Director Erin Freeman in a reflective morning meditation.

We welcome acclaimed pianist, Sean Chen, to the stage for Dmitri Shostakovich’s humorous, dark, and exciting first piano concerto, under the direction of Maestra Michelle Merrill alongside trumpeter David Vonderheide and the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra. To honor the late Michael White – composer, teacher, consummate Mozart fan, and beloved friend of Wintergreen Music – this concert is specially programmed with Mozart’s “Great G minor Symphony,” rustling underpinnings, brooding melodies, and a fiery finale worthy of Don Giovanni himself.

Get your popcorn and get ready for a special Movie Night Double-Feature! This concert starts with a double piano concerto a la Shostakovich before lighting up the screen with four Hearst Corporation animated shorts from the 1910s, complete with scores composed and conducted by our LEAD Cooperative students and played by professional Wintergreen Festival Artists. Then to the main event: a new version of Orson Welles’ 1938 comedy Too Much Johnson, with a brand new score composed by the one and only Daron Hagen! We’ll save you a seat.

Along with world premiere scorings of songs by Daron Hagen & Gilda Lyons and a musical interpretation of the story of Apollo and Daphne, this concert will make you feel like you can see the Northern Lights – from atop Wintergreen Mountain!

We pay tribute to artist, composer, and lecturer Michael White with two of his most intimate pieces and a soulful quartet by his beloved Mozart. Reflect on Michael’s memory with his deepest Wintergreen admirers — musicians and patrons alike.
The Wintergreen Music Festival was founded with performances that started in private residences. We honor this tradition with two special concerts this year where cocktail hour and socializing meet casual and intimate performance. These events are open to the public, however first invitations will be extended to Circle Level Donors and Festival Season Passholders; space is limited.

Then experience Beethoven’s sunny second symphony, which he fittingly composed during the summer of 1801.

Raise the tent and experience Fate’s ever-turning wheel with Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with full percussion, two pianos, and the 2022 Wintergreen Sing with Us! Chorus. This special concert features an opening set by the Richmond Symphony Chamber Chorus performing music of Caroline Shaw, Duke Ellington, and a unique setting of Beethoven’s “Heiligenstadt Testament,” in which he reflects on his ultimate fate: growing deaf.

Arrive as early as 6:30 pm to enjoy delicious festive light bites and a complimentary champagne toast. We're rolling out the red carpet (quite literally!) for you to have your photo taken with a gorgeous mountain backdrop and fun musical props – the perfect way to celebrate the return of music to the mountain!
When you enter the Dunlop Pavilion, prepare to be wowed with a traditional jazz combo featuring the stylings of Meredith Riley (violin) and Charlie Messersmith (clarinet). Then, the full Wintergreen Festival String Orchestra takes the stage to delight you with sounds of tango, polka, and even a hoe down. This is one Opening Night event you don’t want to miss!
